Position Overview
We are seeking a talented Senior Architect/Designer to join our collaborative team and take ownership of projects from initial concept through final construction. This role offers the opportunity to work on exceptional projects while developing meaningful relationships with discerning clients who value exceptional design and attention to detail. The ideal candidate will be a creative problem-solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about residential design.
Key Responsibilities
Lead project teams from schematic design through construction administration, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. Coordinate with consultants, contractors, and city officials throughout the design and construction process. Maintain project schedules, track budgets, and communicate regularly with clients regarding project progress. Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and quality control.
Collaborate with partners and senior staff to develop innovative design solutions. Create compelling design presentations for client meetings, including conceptual sketches, 3D visualizations, and material boards. Lead design charrettes and brainstorming sessions to explore creative solutions. Ensure all design work meets the firm's high standards for aesthetic excellence and functional performance.
Produce comprehensive construction documents using AutoCAD and Revit software. Create detailed architectural drawings including plans, sections, elevations, and details that clearly communicate design intent to contractors and city officials. Develop and maintain drawing standards and template files to ensure consistency across all projects. Coordinate project consultants, to integrate all building systems seamlessly.
Conduct thorough building code research for complex residential projects, including zoning analysis, setback requirements, and height restrictions specific to San Francisco's unique regulatory environment. Analyze lot coverage, floor area ratios, and other zoning constraints to maximize project potential while ensuring full compliance.
Manage the entire permit application process from initial submission through final approval. Prepare and submit permit applications to the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection and Planning Department. Coordinate with city planners and building officials to address comments and secure approvals. Track permit status and communicate updates to clients and project teams. Handle permit expediting, when required, to meet project deadlines.
Provide comprehensive construction administration services throughout the building process. Conduct regular site visits to monitor construction progress and ensure compliance with construction documents and design intent. Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, and material samples for conformance with project specifications. Process contractor requests for information (RFIs) and change orders in a timely manner. Coordinate with general contractors to resolve field conditions and maintain project quality standards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture from an accredited program
- 5-7 years of professional architectural experience, preferably in high-end residential design
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit
- Strong knowledge of building codes, particularly California Building Code and San Francisco local amendments
- Experience with permit applications and city approval processes
- Excellent project management and organizational skills
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines
- Professional registration as an architect in California preferred but not required
