Senior Job Captain/Architectural Staff Level III (Kennerly Architecture & Planning)
Senior Job Captain/ Architectural Staff Level III – 8-10+ years’ experience
Kennerly Architecture & Planning is an award-winning architectural practice based in downtown San Francisco.
We are looking for an experienced Senior Job Captain to join our team. We are seeking someone who is self-motivated, good-humored, and deeply engaged with architecture across all phases of a project. This position plays a key role in how we deliver work — contributing from early design through completion, serving as a technical and design resource for the project team, and helping ensure that our standards of quality and care carry through every stage.
We provide competitive salaries and benefits which include health insurance with HSA, 401(k), commuter benefits, and a professional education stipend.
Responsibilities
- Participate in conceptual design and provide sustained technical and design support through all project phases.
- Develop and represent the lead technical viewpoint on assigned projects, coordinating with the Project Architect and Project Manager on design decisions and strategies.
- Coordinate with consultants (structural, MEP, civil, landscape) to integrate engineering systems with design intent.
- Prepare and oversee construction documents with attention to design quality, code compliance, and built outcomes.
- Navigate city entitlement, permitting, and plan check processes; respond to agency comments.
- Support construction administration, including RFI responses, submittals, and site observation as needed.
- Manage and maintain project BIM models and drawing standards in collaboration with the broader project team.
- Mentor junior staff and support their growth in both design thinking and technical skills.
- Maintain awareness of evolving building technology, materials, and sustainable design practices.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of post-graduate architecture experience, with a track record of contributing across multiple project phases on multi-family residential or similar project types.
- Ability to develop and represent technical and design viewpoints with confidence — a subject matter expert who can engage meaningfully with architects, consultants, and contractors.
- Experience with California state and local building codes, Title 24, accessibility requirements, and the local permitting process.
- Fluent in Revit, ACAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite; familiarity with BIM coordination workflows.
- Strong communication skills — verbal and visual — with the ability to work effectively with the internal team, consultants, contractors, and city agencies.
- Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and focused. We look for people who are independent thinkers while still being team players.
- Accredited architectural degree (BArch or MArch); demonstrated progress toward licensure is a plus.
- Fluent in English.
- Legally authorized to work in the US indefinitely without sponsorship or other legal support from Kennerly Architecture.
The hiring salary range for this position is $100,000 to $120,000. Compensation will be determined by the candidate's skills, education and experience as assessed during the interview process.
