Project Architect (6-12 Years) – Residential & Commercial (Shelterwerk)
Job Summary:
Shelterwerk is a small, design-focused architecture firm in downtown Oakland working on a wide range of locally based residential and commercial projects. We are looking for a Project Architect / Senior Designer who enjoys being deeply involved in all phases of a project — from early concept through construction — and who values collaboration, craft, and quality built environments.
This role is ideal for someone who wants meaningful design input, technical leadership, and direct engagement with clients and consultants.
Education & Experience:
- Graduate of an accredited Architecture program with 6-12 years of direct experience in an architectural office(s).
- Intermediate knowledge of private single-family residential (multifamily ok) and/or commercial architecture, interior design experience a plus. Experience in producing technical drawings and presentation documents. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of coordination with building systems, e.g., MEP & structural, along with architectural detailing. Capable of solving design and detail problems with minimal supervision. Must have a solid working knowledge of product costs, the entitlements process, and 2025 CA Building Codes, along with a desire to work on a wide range of project types and scales.
Qualifications and Responsibilities:
- Fluency in Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Adobe Creative Cloud. Knowledge of other 3D modeling software along with comfort in alternative forms of representation (sketching, physical modeling, painting, etc) a plus.
- Lead projects from concept design through construction administration, with the support of a small, collaborative team.
- Coordinate consultant drawings.
- Provide mentorship and technical resources to more junior staff.
- Developing and maintaining project schedules; managing design fees; and producing cost-aware design solutions that align with a client’s stated overall budget, with a working understanding of construction and soft costs to ensure designs remain feasible at a ROM level.

Salary: $95,000 - $110,000 annual salary, commensurate with experience.
