Position Description
Job Captain (JC) possesses the ability to handle complex assignments by demonstrating a strong technical understanding of construction materials, methods, and specifications. They direct and supervise Designers at all levels, overseeing project assignments and ensuring alignment with project goals, while working closely with PMs or above to coordinate project phases and align design deliverables with project schedules and budgets. The Job Captain position is the bridge between the Designers and the Project Managers operationally and for career advancement.
Responsibilities
- Manages and supervises junior staff (Designer III and lower) and reports to Project Manager I or above
- May have similar responsibilities to Project Manager I on smaller projects
- Typically works on 1-2 primary projects
- Introduction to client relationship management [beyond meeting attendance]
- Responsible for all phases of project development including document planning and coordination as well as detail development, design development and preparation of project presentation drawings and construction documents
- Focus on learning project scheduling and budgets
- May lead client presentations / meetings
- Is responsible for consultant coordination
- Understands and manages more complex permitting processes [CEQA / variances, etc]
- Produces outline specs
- Leads CA process
- Provide technical expertise to ensure coordinated, high quality construction documents
- Focus on QC and excellent team leadership
Qualifications
- Accredited degree in Architecture
- 5-6 years minimum of professional, high-end residential experience
- May be licensed or non-licensed but close to license
- Excellent ability to design, draw, model and communicate visually
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proactive, organized, and collaborative with exceptional problem-solving skills
- Advanced skill in 3D modeling/BIM software and 2D drafting (ArchiCAD strongly preferred, but not required)
- Ability to manage complex assignments and/or small to midsized teams
- Technical knowledge of Type V construction preferred
