Sketchy Tuesday - Salesforce Park

A well-established staple of the Architecture and the City Festival, Sketchy Tuesdays returns as an immersive two-part series designed to transform San Francisco into an open-air classroom. Guided by artist Dan Hogman, AIA, this program offers a deliberate opportunity to slow down, disconnect from digital screens, and deeply observe the
layered histories of the built environment through the analog act of hand-drawing.

Each session presents a unique observational challenge; it is a highly collaborative social ecosystem for design professionals and artists alike. Every session ends in a communal "sketch-share" or informal pin-up where participants display their work side-by-side. This shared ritual underscores the broader philosophy of the series: that drawing is not
merely a method of passive documentation, but a way to connect with fellow artists, discuss drawing techniques, and offer critique and advice on the work completed on-site.

The best pieces will be retained by the AIA for future exhibitions.

Recommended Media: 

Participants are encouraged to bring their preferred media—whether fountain pens, graphite, or watercolor blocks— to use the sketchbook as a primary tool for spatial analysis and architectural storytelling.

Two Part Series:

The Sketchy Tuesdays series is structured as a two-part indoor-outdoor interplay:
- Part 1 (September 15, 12:00pm-1:30pm): Meets indoors at the new AIASF Café Space (Cento Coffee), focusing on interior design.
- Part 2 (September 22 12:00pm-1:30pm): Meets outdoors at the Gondala Landing, Salesforce Park to examine public infrastructure, historic structures, and open-air civic plazas.

Lead:

Dan Hogman, AIA.
Dan is an architect (WA, NY), artist, and art educator. A passionate illustrator with a sizable social media following, Dan has developed the capacity to quickly render architectural
concepts, public places, or urban scenes, capturing the essence in few and relevant gestures. His drawings enjoy applicability across a wide range of projects, from simple "travel notes" to high-rise residential design. Dan teaches architectural drawing at the Academy of Art and has led numerous public and private sketch events with the AIA. Dan holds master's degrees in architecture and museology from the Academy of Art and Harvard University.
