Gothic in Concrete: The Architecture of Grace Cathedral

Join architectural historian and Grace Cathedral trustee Bridget Maley for an oral presentation explaining how one of America’s great Gothic cathedrals was built in concrete, not stone, as a direct response to the 1906 earthquake and fire. Maley traces Grace’s evolution from an $8,000 Gold Rush chapel to the Nob Hill landmark, revealing how Beaux-Arts-trained architect Lewis P. Hobart reimagined Paris’s Notre-Dame and Sainte-Chapelle for San Francisco. You’ll learn how the cathedral rose in phases over 50 years, from a crypt that served as the cathedral for 16 years to the dramatic placement of its spire.
