Walking Home Tour: Donald MacDonald’s Cottage Infill Homes in San Francisco
Join us for a stroll through San Francisco’s architectural history!
In the 1980s, Donald MacDonald designed and developed a series of urban infill housing projects throughout San Francisco. The Lower Haight and Duboce Park neighborhoods contain four groupings. In each case, MacDonald found a vacant lot and positioned 20x20 cottages on it based on his belief that Americans wanted a recognizable home that also had some amount of outdoor private space. MacDonald used multiple strategies to meet the planning code and build the cottages affordably. Forty years later, they provide an example of how to work with the realities of a site to create dignified, affordable housing.
This walking tour will visit these four sites to learn more about MacDonald’s strategies.
