Designing with Purpose: Equity, Climate, and the Future of Architecture

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Latinos in Architecture (LiA) KC is excited to welcome Carlos Agusto Garcia, AIA to the Bay Area. A Principal and Studio Director at Brooks Scarpa Huber Architects in Los Angeles and a nationally recognized leader at the intersection of evidence-based design, climate justice, and public policy, Carlos will share lessons from his professional path from post-Katrina disaster recovery to national leadership in sustainable design, professional advocacy and inclusive practice. His presentation will focus on designing with measurable outcomes; environmental stewardship, climate justice and advocacy; and BSH’s investigative studio culture as a driver for design excellence and responsible innovation.

Carlos Augusto Garcia, AIA, NCARB, WELL AP:

Carlos Augusto is a Principal and Studio Director at Brooks Scarpa Huber Architects, (f.k.a Brooks + Scarpa). Driven by early career experiences in post-Katrina disaster recovery, he has dedicated his practice to demonstrating how design excellence can heal community-level wounds and promote human flourishing. His work spans high-performance affordable housing, sustainable urban infrastructure, and international standards, advocating that architecture must serve as a proactive public health intervention.
A recipient of the National AIA Young Architects Award, Carlos Augusto actively moves design upstream through his leadership with the AIA, NCARB, ICC, GSA, and numerous other organizations. As a dedicated mentor to dozens of licensure candidates, he champions inclusive firm culture, generative design research, and the advancement of underrepresented voices in the built environment. Through his work with the California Architectural Foundation, ACSA, and higher education programs, he continues to bridge the gap between technical rigor, civic leadership, and equitable community stewardship.
