AIASF Tour Day: Marin Architectural Homes

Evolution + Site

How does architecture adapt over time while remaining deeply connected to its history, legacy, and the land it inhabits? This tour explores that question through two extraordinary Marin County homes — each a testament to the enduring power of site and the thoughtful evolution of a modernist vision. Join us for an intimate look inside spaces that span a century of California Modernism, with discussions led by the architects behind the work.

The Bullseye House, San Rafael Hills | Feldman Architecture

The Crest Estate, Belvedere | Edmonds + Lee Architects & Mundan Fry Landscape Architects

Stop 1 — The Bullseye House | San Rafael Hills
Designed by Henrik Bull in 1963. The main house renovated by Feldman Architecture, and the guest house completed in 2026

Nestled in a redwood grove above the San Rafael hills, this project began with a ghost and a few pencil sketches. The main house on the property was designed in 1963 by the beloved Bay Area architect Henrik Bull, FAIA — known for a warm, livable modernism deeply attuned to the natural world. Decades later, the homeowners discovered a set of drawings Bull had made for a guest house he never built. They turned to Feldman Architecture to bring that vision to life.

Working collaboratively over time, Feldman Architecture meticulously studied the original structure's proportions, details, and spirit — then asked: what would Henrik Bull have done with today's materials and technology? The result honors its predecessor through a shared gable pitch, a full-length ridge skylight that tracks light across the interior like a sundial, redwood siding, and recurring chevron details — while fully embracing 21st-century craft. A rare and moving conversation between mid-century vision and contemporary architecture, inseparable from its wooded site.

Guests will tour the property before joining a moderated discussion with the architect:

Stop 2 — The Crest Estate | Belvedere
Designed by William Wurster and Thomas Church, 1967 | Renovated by ELA and MFLA in 2013

Belvedere was established in the late 1800s as a weekend retreat for San Francisco's elite, and it remains one of the Bay Area's most coveted enclaves. The Crest estate occupies the pinnacle of the island — the ultimate vantage point — commanding sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Sausalito yacht harbor, the full San Francisco skyline, and Angel Island to the east. The site itself is the story: as the city skyline evolved and the Golden Gate Bridge rose in the 1930s, the hilltop became the island's most prized address.

The home was designed in 1967 by William Wurster, one of the towering figures of California Modernism. Wurster led the architecture schools at both MIT and UC Berkeley, and received the AIA Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement in 1969. The grounds were conceived by his celebrated contemporary Thomas Church, the landscape architect widely credited with defining the California garden — whose influence on American landscape design remains profound to this day. Together, they created a work inseparable from its site: Wurster's philosophy — "Architecture is for life and pleasure and work and for people. The picture frame, not the picture" — finds its fullest expression here, where curving walls of glass dissolve the boundary between house and hillside, and Church's landscape flows seamlessly toward the bay. A 2013 renovation by the present design team honored that founding vision while sensitively adapting the home for contemporary life — a careful stewardship of both architectural legacy and extraordinary place.

Guests will enjoy a wine reception and a moderated discussion about the approach of the renovating design team before touring the grounds and interior:
