Studio Role:                 

Works under the direction of the Principals. Primarily responsible for planning, coordination and administering major projects or several smaller projects through all phases of development. May also provide design efforts on projects. Establishes budgets, prepares schedules and monitors adherence to office standards and terms of contract. Is responsible for design development and production of construction documents on given projects. Responsible for mentoring, training, evaluating and oversight of lower-level studio personnel.

Educational / Experience Requirements:

The responsibilities and knowledge requirements of this position usually require a minimum of 7+ years work experience. Additional requirements may be one or more of the following:

  • Licensed Architect in California or other states within the US or actively pursuing licensure with completion or passing of one or more sections.
  • Advanced knowledge of standard office drafting software (i.e., AutoCAD/ADT 2007).
  • Ability to prepare a set of full set of construction documents for Type V buildings.
  • Advanced knowledge of building codes for Type V buildings.
  • Advanced knowledge of UBC/CBC and accessibility design standards.
  • Strong understanding of project objectives, goals, client expectations and project concepts.
  • Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Project and Replicon (preferable).
  • Understanding of merchant-built housing, product types and markets preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must show the ability to multi-task and meet demanding deadlines.
  • Good assessment and decision-making skills.
  • A positive collaborator that enjoys responsibility.
Skills and Responsibilities
  • May develop conceptual and schematic design for projects.
  • Able to translate free hand sketches into a hard-lined presentation documents via CAD or hand drafting.
  • Able to render design drawings.
  • Able to translate engineers’ site surveys into architectural plot plans.
  • Capable of preparation of as-built plans.
Design Development and Production
  • Able to prepare a full set of construction documents for projects.
  • Able to transpose sketched details, sections and notes onto construction documents.
  • Able to design details.
  • Coordination of architectural and engineering drawings.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of building codes and Type V construction.
  • CAD inputting, checking and plotting.
  • Understanding of outline specifications.
  • Shop drawing review with close supervision.
  • Coordination of permit and approvals process for projects.
  • Review of DD and CD phases check sets for projects.
Construction Administration
  • Some phases of construction site observation and administration.
  • Bid administration for projects.
Administrative/General
  • Initiates Requests for Proposals for projects and prepares Extra Service Requests for projects.
  • Budget preparation for projects.
  • Some degree of client contact and liaison.
  • Establishes budgets, prepares schedules and monitors adherence to contract terms for projects.
  • Responsible for teaching, mentoring, and developing lower-level staff members of the studio if applicable.
  • Represents interests of firm in professional organizations.
  • Project adherence to office standards in terms of design, design development, production, and administration.
  • Regular, timely completion of timesheets and other office administrative requirements.
