This course describes the best practices, methods, theories and approaches for integrating art into architectural spaces. It is well recognized that artistic elements in built environments transform and create memorable and uplifting experiences for users of the space. In addition to providing aesthetic enhancements, thoughtful and well-integrated art can introduce welcoming, placemaking and iconographic benefits to the architectural space. We will review a variety of case studies, which demonstrate the benefits of integrating art in architectural and landscape settings. Techniques, approaches and methodology of art integration, along with best practices of adding an artist to the project team will also be discussed.

About the Presenter

Gordon Huether, CEO and Artist
Gordon Huether + Partners, Inc.

Committed to the goal of creating a lasting impact on the world around him, Gordon Huether, born in Rochester, NY in 1959, founded his studio in Napa, California with a mission to create large-scale site-specific permanent artwork installations. Working extensively with glass and lighting, and often incorporating repurposed objects, metals, and synthetic materials, Huether’s work ranges from integrated architectural installations to freestanding sculptures, to immersive artwork for landscape settings.

Huether’s careful consideration of the artwork installation in context with the place and its users has led to over 75 public art projects and over 170 private commissions. Projects have included installations for airports, civic buildings, corporations, hospitals, hotels, libraries, museums, parking garages, recreation, transportation centers, and universities throughout the world. In his biggest project to date, Huether is currently working with the Salt Lake City International Airport Department of Airports in designing, fabricating and installing significant multi-million dollar installations for its Terminal Redevelopment Program, expected to be complete in 2024. His work has also been exhibited at museums and galleries, and is collected across the United States.
