In today's fast pace Design World of Architecture, Engineering and Construction there is always ways to improve and innovate on how we collaborate, design and deliver the projects after we win the work!
Everywhere around the built environment, especially in California and the Bay Area we realize that our AEC professions overlap, sometimes by choice, most times by coincidence. We are designing spaces that are supposed to ultimately meet our common clients wish list and the needs of the future building occupants, 2019 CA Codes and local jurisdiction requirements beyond the code. Is that really enough of a list for you as designers and decision makers? What else are you looking for or missing? Is it tools, resources or its something else you need to propel your design?
Unfortunately, in preschematic design we rarely discuss some of the hidden benefits of the important features of each building that doesn't necessarily are written in the 2019 CA Building Code or OPR-Owner Project Requirements. Because of the speed, the skyrocketing cost and the out of state competition low bid culprits, as AEC designers, we often forget about designing spaces to enhance peoples productivity but only try to make the design delivery "deadline". Is making the deadline the only thing one cares within our professions?
We would usually design a modern space via bringing natural light, or right sized facade with operable windows for proper thermal and visual comfort-simple design is better but is it always better? Have you ever worked on design that has failed and willing to share your experience with the panel presenters? Fortunately there isn't only one aspect of building design, there is several dozen or more that matter. How about noise propagation criteria, sustainable materials for occupants well being and space constraints for equipment proper inspection, maintenance and durable HVAC Systems that don't have high initial cost? How about attrition rates for the buildings occupants or sick days? Do you believe majority of the designers don't use rule of thumb and don't copy paste designs or cost them $/sf? How about VRF and DOAS vs Fan Coil or VAV Chilled Water or Packaged systems? How about electrification and sustainability goals to get to our REACH Code AIA CA is pushing for-how do we attack this in the future?.....and we are writing the future and your signature is on it!

Dr. Brandon Tinianov, View Inc VP of Industry Strategy, will touch base on several important COGfx studies and latest industry trends where teams have experimented not only with Laboratory and Research spaces, but also real World scenarios and outcomes. View's team is trying to create smart and connected buildings to improve people’s health and wellness, while simultaneously reducing energy consumption. He will touch on the current market trends in smart windows that let in natural light and views and enhance mental and physical well-being by significantly reducing headaches, eyestrain and drowsiness. Every View installation includes a 'smart building platform' that consists of power, network and communication infrastructure...
Mr. Alan McDermott, Sigler Inc is a manufacturers representative of Carier in San Francisco. Carier is a brand under United Technologies umbrella and part of in the study along Harvard researchers and Ameresco. Alan will talk about the common buzz of heat pumps and electrification, compare VRF systems and DOAS Meaning. He will touch on space constraints, costs, delivery methods, sound criteria, maintenance and ongoing performance. There will also be a discussion on lessons learned and sharing the latest and greatest in technology advancements and how this systems can fit into your future designs since most counties and officials are looking into prohibiting systems using natural gas as part of the Climate Change innitiative.
Mr. Nikola Kravik will brigde the building professionals, science, technology and manufacturers into one design unity that functions from the beginning to the end of the design process by comparing the real World AEC designs and latest industry trends. He will touch on building loads and tool used and misused! He will discuss how MEP Engineers approach designing buildings currently vs the future. Mr Kravik will share case studies and lessons learned for AEC Professionals and how we collectively prepare for the future within the CA State 2020, 2030 challenges. Furthermore, he will expand on his 15 yrs experience within the AEC, his experience with ZNE Buildings and his role as Archiengineer and Leader constantly pushing the boundaries of the ordinary HVAC design and delivery methods via innovation and collaboration with all stakeholders.

About the Presenters
Mechanical Sales Engineer | Russell Sigler
Alan McDermott is a Mechanical Sales Engineer for Russell Sigler’s (Carrier) Engineering Design group, headquartered in South San Francisco, CA. Alan graduated from University of California, Riverside, with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He has 8 years of experience in design, construction, sales, and customer service. During his career with Sigler/Carrier, he has focused on supporting mechanical engineers and owners to design efficient and sustainable buildings. When he is not saving the world one HVAC system as a time, Alan enjoys a plethora of activities involving sports, music, and traveling. Within those activities, he has recently found an obsession for golf and exploring Southeast Asia.
Dr. Brandon Tiniyanov
VP of Industry Strategy | View
Dr. Tinianov 25-year career has been dedicated to product innovation in the field of building technology and real estate. He currently serves as View’s VP of Industry Strategy where work spans current trends in commercial real estate, workplace strategy, and research on the impact of the built environment on the health and wellness of occupants. Prior to joining View, Brandon was the Chief Technology Officer at Serious Energy and prior to that, a senior researcher at the Johns Manville Corporation. Brandon is the Chair of the Advisory Council of the US Green Building Council and a member of their Board of Directors. He has a PhD in Engineering Systems, is a registered Professional Engineer and a LEED Accredited Professional.
Nikola Kravik, BEMP, LEED AP
Mr. Kravik’s 15-year career in the Bay Area, has been dedicated to sustainable building design within multiple AEC industry sectors, roles and mega projects alike The New Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, Disney Aulani Resort in Ko’Olina Hawaii and Vallco Town Center in Cupertino among few. He currently serves as Public Director for AIA San Francisco where his volunteer work bridges the Engineering with the Architectural profession. He brings knowledge and ideas to help enhance and advocate better holistic building design by superior collaboration and data sharing with all AIA SF stakeholders. Mr. Kravik is Past President of ASHRAE Golden Gate Chapter and current Board member of the ASHRAE Redwood Empire. He also served on the IBPSA-USA San Francisco Committee 2013-2018. Mr. Kravik holds a BSME in Mechanical Engineering from San Francisco State University and Associate Degree for Motor Vehicle Design from the Mechanical University in Skopje, Republic of N. Macedonia (FYROM-Former Yugoslavia). He is BEMP certified and LEED Legacy.
Fun facts: Mr. Kravik is past Professional Basketball player, Macedonian National Junior Team 1994-1995. Mr. Kravik’s current professional interests include: Human Capital and knowledge sharing, Mobility of the future SF energy pie-technology-iOT, mass public alternative transportation and Cities 2050’s technological challenges and targets. This directly relates to the newest industry buzz of “electrification” and State of CA 2030, 2040 and 2050 Carbon Targets.
