Green roofs are a great tool for cities to improve their green footprint, for architects to improve their buildings’ performance and appearance, for landscape architects to expand their landscape canvas, for building owners to lower their energy costs, and much more.
Like every other tool though, green roofs can only perform as desired when designed and implemented by skilled and knowledgeable professionals.
This engaging presentation will cover the benefits, challenges, risks, and different versions of this promising design technology. The four presenters come with unique professional expertise, shedding light on the various aspects of green roof assemblies.

About the Presenters:
Nick Gotthardt is a Principal at Surfacedesign, a landscape architecture and urban design firm based in San Francisco. Nick has been involved in the design, project management and construction on a range of projects, including small residential gardens, wineries, parks, green roofs and large campus master plans. In addition to practicing with SDI, Nick has made it a priority to stay connected with the academic community both within the Bay Area and beyond – serving on review juries, curriculum advisory committees and teaching design studio at UC Berkeley.
Brent Bucknum is the Founding Principal of Hyphae Design Laboratory, a consulting, design, and engineering firm that bridges the gap between innovative architecture and applied biological sciences. He is also the Co-founder of Urban Bio-filter, an Oakland non-profit that advocates for biological systems solutions to pollution in urban areas. His expertise includes the design of institutional, municipal, commercial, and residential-scale living roofs, low-impact stormwater projects, ecological landscapes, and rainwater, graywater, and ecological wastewater treatment systems.
Amber Antracoli is a Senior Project Manager at NSA Architects, a building envelope consulting firm based in Oakland. Amber has been involved in waterproofing and remedial design for over 15 years, and has experience in material selection and in conducting building investigations. She conducts investigations and surveys of failed building assemblies and existing structures, and often bridges the gap between general contractors and changes in the industry technology. Amber's responsibilities include remedial waterproofing design, detail development, coordination of drawings and specifications, and contract administration services.
Kirstin Weeks is an Associate and Building Ecology Specialist at Arup with 15 years of experience in sustainability consulting. She champions the San Francisco office’s Net Positive Design initiative, and specializes in integration of ecological function in the built environment. Kirstin works with interdisciplinary teams to create built environments that work like ecosystems, eliminating waste as a concept and supporting biophilic wellness, biodiversity, regeneration and reliance on renewable resources. Her project experience extends from sustainability leadership to policy and plan development, research and cost-benefit studies
