A LITTLE ABOUT US

Herman Coliver Locus Architecture is a rather unusual firm in as much as all of our clients are non-profit, community-based organizations. Our work is mission-driven and our clients’ best interests are not motivated by a desire for commercial success. Our projects fall primarily into two building types: dignified, very low income housing for families, seniors, adults with disabilities living independently, aged-out foster youth and those suffering from homelessness on the one hand, and, sacred spaces and associated communal institutions on the other.

There is probably no other architectural firm in the country with such an unlikely dual focus. This is precisely the sort of practice we set out to craft when we founded the firm. There are 14 of us in the studio, all of whom have architectural degrees. One quarter of us are LEED certified. Four of our completed projects have received GreenPoint Platinum ratings, 1 has received LEED Platinum and 1 is LEED Silver. We’ve been honored to receive numerous local and national design AIA awards.

Our signature is an attention to human-scale. We strive to give shape to residents’ and congregants’ aspirations, providing emotional and intellectual sustenance, as well as shelter.

 


 

TOUR

We’ll take a blink at the studio, grab some tasty tidbits, then gather to discuss our 2 most exciting new projects: (1) a supportive housing development near the corner of Mission & 7th comprised of 256 factory-built, studio apts for adults and seniors suffering from chronic homelessness, built over a full-service urgent care clinic, offices for the SF Homeless Outreach Team and a chef’s training program for those hoping to re-enter the workforce. How’s that for an incredible program? We can hardly wait to show it to you! (2) a from-the-ground-up new synagogue which includes indoor and outdoor sacred spaces as well as a community kitchen and celebratory gathering hall. You’ll hear from a principal, a project manager, a job captain and a junior designer, each speaking from their own perspective about the design and management processes of these two projects. We’re happy to be interrupted with questions as they arise, so you can ask what’s really on your minds, as your curiosity dictates. the other.
