Seminar Topics

Part I: 2.5 Hours
Site Accessibility and Universal Design Case Study

This seminar will cover site accessibility, including the scoping requirements, site accessible routes of travel, parking, passenger loading areas, curb ramps, detectable warnings,ramps and stairs.Common errors, omissions and best practices will be highlighted throughout the presentation.

Universal Design case study of an indoor/outdoor museum.The benefits of mainstreaming Universal Design and the improvement in the quality of life for people with a wide variety of abilities will be discussed.

Part II: 2.5 Hours
Transient Lodging and Universal Design Case Study

This training session covers the accessibility requirements for transient lodging at hotels, motels, inns, dormitories, resorts, housing at a place of education and social service establishments. The topics include scoping and technical requirements for guestrooms with mobility as well as communication features, dispersion, storage, toilet and bathing facilities, kitchens, kitchenettes and wet bars.The presentation includes photos, drawings and graphics that illustrate the different topics covered.

The training includes a case study of the San Francisco Lighthouse for the Blind, highlighting the many features and the inspiring design process and solutions to provide a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment for persons with visual impairments and all users.

  1. Review of the site accessibility scoping and technical requirements that are an important part of most projects.
  2. Understanding the benefits of Universal Design and inspirational case studies.
  3. Transient Lodging Accessibility scoping and technical requirements.
  4. Common errors and best practices will be discussed.

 


About the Presenter

Gilda Puente-Peters Architects, (GPPA) CASp-24

Gilda Puente-Peters, Principal of GPPA Architects, is a licensed Architect and a Certified Access Specialists with over 30 years of specialized experience in Accessibility, Universal Design and Education. Gilda is considered an Expert in Disabled Access and has developed an extensive curriculum and has provided accessibility trainings throughout the State of California and Internationally. Ms. Puente-Peters has served as a member of the California Division of the State Architect’s Subject Matter Experts Committee to advice on the development of the State’s Certified Access Specialist Program.

Gilda brings to her training programs a wealth of practical experience from the wide variety of services provided by her firm, including Transition Plans, Self-Evaluations, CASp accessibility surveys, Plan Review, Inspections, Policy Making, Training Programs and Code Compliance Consultations for the public and private sector.
