As the Bay Area's premier destination for architecture and design, AIA San Francisco offers many dynamic programs and opportunities to explore the local built environment throughout the year. The San Francisco and Marin Living Home Tours series and the Architecture and the City festival provide individuals with a firsthand look at the world of good design in the region. AIA San Francisco's annual Design Awards programs and Small Firms, Great Projects publication celebrate and promote the work of local design professionals.
Women in Architecture
In the United States, women represent about 50% of students enrolled in architecture programs, but only 18% of licensed architects are women. AIA San Francisco convenes leading professionals to discuss pressing issues within the architectural profession and explore changes necessary to keep future generations of practitioners engaged in the field.
Presented by AIA San Francisco and the Center for Architecture + Design, Marin Living: Home Tours and San Francisco Living: Home Tours is the first tour series of its kind in the Bay Area to promote a wide variety of architectural styles, neighborhoods, and residences - all from the architect's point of view. The annual program provides design enthusiasts and the general public with an inside look into the world of distinctive residences in the Bay Area.
Architecture at Zero
Architecture at Zero is an international architectural design competition open to students and professionals worldwide. The zero net energy (ZNE) design competition is intended to encourage architecture, engineering, and planning firms (and students in those fields) to create ZNE developments and buildings, with the goal of promoting and disseminating information on ZNE best practices in the building and development communities.
One of the West Coast's only galleries devoted solely to the exploration of architecture and design, the AIA San Francisco / Center for Architecture + Design Gallery specializes in exhibitions showcasing the best of Bay Area design talent, while also exploring issues of national and international concern. Past exhibitions have included a collaboration with the Netherlands Architecture Institute, winning projects from the Architecture at Zero Competition, and the work of Bay Area architectural photographers.
Small Firms, Great Projects showcases the innovative and award-winning work of local architecture and design professionals. Open to architecture, landscape architecture and interior architecture firms with 19 or fewer employees, the program provides a venue for small firms to showcase their best work in a magazine publication, online and companion exhibition.
AIA San Francisco's Design Awards program celebrates the best in architecture and urban design in the Bay Area. Recognizing achievement in a broad range of architectural work by members and nonmembers, the program serves to inform the public of the breadth and value of architectural practice.
