Merit Award

Architecture

Creating informal opportunities for learning and interaction, the design supports the museum's mission to allow all visitors to become students. This project offers a model for the future museum that is neither isolated nor exclusive, but open and permeable; not a static shrine, but a constantly evolving public event.

The jury noted that this is a structure that excels at playing with light; the shadows that the form create are the most powerful expression of the building. The architects have drawn the pattern of the trellised ceiling structure as a shadow device in response to the surrounding context of the site—by using this structure to break down the barrier of entry to the building, the result is not overbearing, but very welcoming.
