Stanford Health Care System made a strategic decision to better serve the East Bay market through identification of an existing, 100,000 SF building shell and conversion into a specialty ambulatory clinical center.  Attendees will learn aspects of strategic decision making, design-build approach, medical planning and interior design to win the project and deliver the facility on time and within budget.

Learning Objectives

  1. Strategic decisions to identify optimal location and appropriate existing building shell to achieve "speed to market".
  2. Design-Build Team due-diligence strategies to understand building attributes, as well as implementation concepts necessary to meet owner's budgetary goals.
  3. Planning and design process to accommodate complex clinical program goals within challenging, triangular building shape, originally conceived for scientific research labs.
  4. Reinterpretation of established branding concepts to extend the health system's imagery into expanded market service area.

 


About the Speakers

George R. Tingwald, MD, AIADirector of Medical Planning, Stanford Health Care

George Tingwald is Stanford Health Care’s Director of Medical Planning, one of a handful of persons nationwide to hold both an MD degree and an AIA designation as a professional architect. In an unusual combination of skills and expertise, Dr. Tingwald applies his qualifications as an architect and doctor of medicine to create practical and efficient designs for health care facilities. Having received special training in surgery and ancillary services, emergency services, and women’s and children’s health, he is committed to designing facilities that merge excellent medical functionality with the primary needs of patients and families. Because of his comprehensive skill set, Dr. Tingwald is especially adept in authoring campus and hospital master plans.

Lari Maria DiazPrincipal | Healthcare, KMD Architects

Lari is the Principal-in-Charge and Senior Medical Planner for the tenant improvement of Stanford Health Center Emeryville. With 25 years of experience with KMD Architects, she has extensive experience in both developing and implementing functional space programs into complex healthcare facilities and campuses. Her diverse background, passion for problem solving, ability to streamline project communications and complete project goals ensures quality results for her clients. Lari is an invaluable team member, facilitating an integrated and interactive project process. 

Branden LaptaloProject Engineer, Hensel Phelps

As a Project Engineer for Hensel Phelps, Branden Laptalo oversees the onsite implementation of all project contracts. Branden cares deeply about the client’s happiness and overall satisfaction throughout the construction process; therefore, as the owner’s advocate on site, every decision he manages is viewed through the eyes of the end user. He is highly skilled in contract development, cost control, submittal coordination, MEP coordination, expediting material deliveries, subcontractor management, negotiating changes, scheduling, and general administrative operations. He places special attention on the resolution of interface conflicts, revisions, exceptions, and required submittals to ensure that all work is approved prior to installation; while maintaining all other priorities to ensure the project schedule is maintained.
