Creating a Sustainable San Francisco by and Innovative Water Strategies at the Transbay Terminal Project (2 HSWs)
March 09, 2010   6:00 - 8:00 pm
AIA San Francisco, 130 Sutter Street, Suite 600

The COTE committee’s March lecture will feature two presentations exploring the intersection of environmental stewardship and urban development.

Creating a Sustainable San Francisco
Laura Spanjian of the SFPUC will cover address the following topics: SF's Climate Action Plan, Transportation Initiatives, Greener Energy Alternatives, the Green Business Program, Managing our Water Resources and Water conservation, Biofuels Program (turning restaurant grease into fuel), Solar Projects including the largest municipal solar project in the country on top of Sunset Reservoir, Energy Efficiency programs, Stormwater management including green roofs and rain barrels, and the Greening of the Civic Center including the construction 525 Golden Gate Avenue (the future headquarters of the SFPUC).

Innovative Water Strategies at the Transbay Terminal
Water conservation is fast becoming recognized as a critical environmental issue for sustainable building design. Advanced water systems can make the most of this critical resource through conservation and reuse, greatly reducing the water needed for domestic use, mechanical systems, and irrigation. This session will look at the Transbay Transit Center, currently in design, as a case study for water reuse in San Francisco. The design team has integrated the landscape, architectural, and energy systems into a single water reuse system that cuts whole-building water use by more than 60%. Several design strategies are being piloted with the City’s regulatory agencies, including stormwater reuse for toilet flushing, greywater reuse, and on-site vegetative greywater filtration. Jenny Henry, Claire Johnson, and Clark Bisel will discuss design drivers, water analysis methods and strategies, energy-water system integration, and regulatory hurdles for water reuse.
