A Venice of China: Transforming China's Cities for the Next Century January 13, 2010 5:30 pm Registration, 6:00 pm Program The Commonwealth Club of California, 595 Market Street, San Francisco Renee Chow, Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban Design and Eva Li Chair of Design Ethics, University of California Berkeley; Principal, Studio URBIS Professor Chow has spent over 30 years documenting and researching Chinese patterns of living, from Uygher villages to modern Beijing. Her work in Zhu Jia Jiao, a canal village outside Shanghai, was the first contemporary analysis of these towns. She will discuss what we can learn from this village, called the “Venice of China,” and address the challenges of designing cities for modern lifestyles. She proposes a new design paradigm-- designing cities as fabrics-- weaving local patterns of architecture, public spaces and people. This talk is part of the Club’s “Cities for the Asian Century” speaker series.
