October 21, 4:30-8:00 pm Visit http://www.acteva.com/booking.cfm?bevaid=94821 to register.
Location: De Young Museum, Koret Auditorium, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco
Provocative museum design has quickly become the new architectural and cultural currency of the 21st century. Renowned architects from around the world are being commissioned to design cutting-edge museums with the intention of bringing in larger audiences, influencing programming and creating destinations just as thrilling as the works they display. San Francisco is no exception. Currently, architects Herzog and de Meuron, Daniel Libeskind, Renzo Piano and Ricardo Legoretta are designing San Francisco museums. As architecture critic John King recently noted, "These buildings aren't merely part of the landscape, or structures crafted with an eye to posterity. They're gambles: bets by clients that a payoff is more likely if the architect is part of the appeal."

On View Now: Architecture as a Cultural Destination focuses on the commissioned work of four San Francisco cultural institutions currently under construction or recently built, and asks each of the invited panelists to discuss their experiences as participants in this process, including the opportunities, challenges and compromises required when architecture is used as a featured attraction to put museums—and even a city—on the cultural map.

Altered Practice
October 6-November 30 Location: AIA San Francisco Gallery, 130 Sutter Street, Suite 600, San Francisco
Altered Practice features architects and designers whose experimental work extends beyond the typical architectural practice. As architectural practice is increasingly re-mixed by digital technology and changing client demands, these practitioners seek new ways to develop and perfect their craft by blurring the boundaries between concept, execution, authorship, and form. Studies by Sean Ahlquist of proces2 design, furniture by IwamotoScott, installation by Jordan Geiger of GA-GA, a home made from salvaged materials by Public Architecture, and works by Bruce Tomb, Loom, Thom Faulders and Christos Marcopoulos as well as others, speak equally to the practice of art, architecture, and design.
