AIA convention, San Francisco – “Mentoring: 3 Modern Approaches”
May, 2009

At the 15 Summit, the Young Architects Forum (YAF) defined mentoring as 'the mutual interchange of ideas, knowledge and experiences associated with the development of true professionals.' The YAF recommends in their Action Plan that modern mentoring initiatives should be centered on professional development, personal support, and practice area/specialty development. In this session, a panel will present these ideals in three models of structured mentoring for use within architecture firms.

Learning objectives:

• Identify the modern definition of mentoring|
• Compare mentor models and distinguish between three areas of modern mentoring: professional development, personal support, and practice area/specialty development
• Evaluate new standards for structured mentoring in your firm, component, or school

Generations at Work: Approaches to Learning and Leading
June 26, 2008

How do you understand the four generations currently in the work force? The challenges of an aging, experienced population and new attitudes toward work and learning are an issue that must be addressed in every organization. Baby boomers are retiring and the youngest generation at work, Gen Y, is growing in numbers in the work place. Just as technology is changing rapidly and must be managed, rampant sociological and demographic change has profound implications for the future of our practices. This lecture discussion explores the facts, the issues and the challenges of four generations at work.

Design the Fee
October 29, 2008

Join Jim Tanner, founding principal of TannerHecht Architecture, for this brown bag lunch on designing effective fee structures. Starting with hand calculated back-of-the-envelope fee projections in the 70’s and evolving through many iterations using Texas Instruments calculators and HP 12C’s through Lotus and Excel spreadsheets, THA’s modest but effective Budget tool allows a quick evaluation the many parameters of fee projections. Explore the impact of staff assignments, billing rates, consultant mark-ups, and project schedule on the overall project fee budget. Evaluate your fee on percentage of construction cost, cost per square foot, cost per sheet of Construction Documents, and average hourly rate.

TannerHecht’s goal is to support professional fee structures that provide adequate compensation for high-level design and production of Architecture as well as for staff development. An Excel template of TannerHecht’s fee structure will be made available to attendees upon request. It has been their policy to share this with colleagues and competitors to encourage responsible fee proposals.

Mentorship Resume Workshop
January 15, 2008

It is always good practice to keep your resume up-to-date. Whether you are looking for a job, completing the requirements for a request for proposal and/or qualification or even applying to graduate school, an updated resume is essential to have on hand. Dave Alpert, AIA and Vice President and Principal of HGA Architects and Engineers along with Tanya Erquiaga, principal architectural recruiter for Aerotek will speak about the importance of keeping your resume current and offer some insights on do’s and don’ts when applying for a job or submitting a request for qualifications to land that next project. Afterwards, in small groups of various experience levels, all will share each other’s resumes and discuss how they can be strengthened. All mentor groups are encouraged to attend as a group for this workshop.
