CONTINUING EDUCATION (CES)

Architect members of AIA are required to earn 18 Learning Units (LUs) each year in order to maintain their membership, eight hours of which are devoted to topics on Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW). The AIA Continuing Education System (CES) works on the honor system. However, AIA National performs an annual audit on members that do not comply with the CES requirements. Non-complying members will be required to report additional units to reinstate their memberships or they will lose their AIA status.

WAYS TO LEARN AND EARN
In addition to attending monthly AIA San Francisco programs and events, below are more recommendations on the best ways to maintain your yearly CES requirements.

  • Check archSF, the AIA San Francisco newsletter, and member postcards each month for CES opportunities.
  • Read the CES Survival Guide.
  • Join an AIA San Francisco committee.
  • Record time spent researching new knowledge (e.g. codes, design structures, computer technologies) for projects, committees, presentations, political activities, courses taught, or any other purpose.*
  • Record your attendance at relevant lectures and courses at museums and other organizations.*
  • Report your learning opportunities when you travel. Identify in advance what you want to learn. For example, tour and describe the treatment of historic buildings in a city you visit.*
  • Check with your office for lunchtime educational presentations.
  • Enroll in a professional development class at The Pacific Energy Center.
  • Participate in Public Architecture's One Percent Solution program.
  • Read the monthly pre-selected articles in Architectural Record or take an Architectural Record quiz.
  • Complete an NCARB monograph and test. For more information, call 202.783.6500.
  • Attend the AIA national convention and expo, or visit AIA National at www.aia.org, and AIA California Council at www.aicc.org for events taking place outside of the Bay Area.
  • Earn up to 2 LU hours of volunteer service on committees, boards, and other projects promoting the architecture profession.*
