Excellence in Architecture

Merit Award: Breland Senior Homes

David Duncan Livingston
David Duncan Livingston

Located on a narrow urban infill site in West Berkeley, Breland Homes is a four-story, 28-unit, affordable senior housing project. To create a nurturing environment, the design focuses on generous natural light in the units; a centralized courtyard for community activities; and a lively palette of colors, materials and landscaping. The jury noted: there are a remarkable number of units in the small site. The architects created a great street presence and beautiful public space.
