CONSTRUCTED REALITIES
|
AIA San Francisco, at the request of the Small Firm Practitioner Committee, presents Constructed Realities, a second awards program offered biennially. Established to recognize exemplary performance in a broad range of architectural work, Constructed Realities serves to inform the public of the diversity, value, and social power of architectural practice. Entrants need not be AIA SF members, and firms of all sizes areencouraged to enter with projects of all sizes and scopes. 2011 categories were Architectural Detail, Pro Bono Design [in partnership with Public Architecture], Restaurant Design [in partnership with the Golden Gate Restaurant Association], and Architecture - Structures with a Small Budget [under $500,000 construction cost]. 2011 AWARD WINNERS Architectural Detail: | HONOR AWARD Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP The Rocker, New Beijing Poly Plaza Understanding structures as moving entities rather than static objects inspired the Rocker, a mechanism developed for the New Beijing Poly Plaza. The Rocker facilitates the suspension of an eight-story, lantern-like museum structure within the office building’s atrium and supports the world’s largest cable-net while actively releasing the effects of earthquakes and heavy winds. The grasp of the client’s hand inspired a custom door handle that is specific to the user and appropriate to the home. The sculpted cast steel complements the warmth of the wood doors. PHOTOGRAPHY: NIC LEHOUX | MANUFACTURER: CAMTEC PRECISION, INC. | | | CITATION AWARD Actual-Size Architecture Bogan Residence, Skylight Reflector/Shade Device This remodel opens the center of the house to daylight while avoiding the problems that low-sloped skylights present: admitting too much heat from the sun during the summer, and cutting off limited winter sunlight. The solution was to let the skylights face up, and design a series of polished stainless steel reflector/shades over the skylights that reflected low light off the panels and onto the wall below during the winter and provided shade in the summer.
