Dues invoices are sent out by the national AIA in early November and are due by January 31. If you do not receive an invoice or your address has changed, please contact the National AIA membership department at 800.242.3837 to update your information and request a new invoice.
Allied, Student, and Component Affiliate members will receive renewal invoices directly from AIA San Francisco as your membership type is only with our local chapter.
TWO WAYS TO RENEW!
1) Renew by Mail
Send in your 2009 invoice with a check or credit card number to:
AIA Membership
P.O. Box 6458
Baltimore, MD 21264-4815
2) Renew Online
*This option is not available to AIA San Francisco Allied and Student members
If your Architect or Associate membership is current you will be able to renew online at the National AIA website www.aia.org through March 31. Select "Renew Your Membership" in the left-hand navigation column. You will be directed to a member login area. You must know your membership number and have your password. The default username and password is your 8-digit membership/customer I.D. number and your last name, using appropriate upper and lower case.
LAPSED MEMBERSHIP
Your membership will lapse if your dues payment is not received by the National office prior to March 31. AIA Architect memberships can also lapse for other reasons, such as not having accumulated enough CES learning units to meet the annual requirements. This is called a "CES Audit" and you will be notified if this applies to you.
If your membership lapses, your mailings will cease and you will be ineligible for Local, State, and National benefits. To avoid this, you can arrange special partial payments with the National office. If you are a firm principal, your firm's web profile in the "Find a Professional" section will also be deactivated until your membership is reinstated.
REINSTATE YOUR LAPSED MEMBERSHIP
You can renew at any time throughout the year. Complete and send in the appropriate membership application with your dues payment. If you do not have a copy of your invoice and need to know your current dues rate, order a replacement by calling the AIA National office at 800.242.3837.
Make sure to include your 8-digit member number to indicate you are a prior member of the AIA. Make sure to update any contact information that has changed, including your home or office addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail address.
If you were not previously a member of AIA SF, your membership will automatically be transferred to our chapter as long as you live or work within San Francisco or Marin counties.
SUPPLEMENTAL DUES
These dues do not apply to Allied firms, or firms in which the Principal is an Associate AIA member.
AIA member firms are responsible for paying additional dues for their non-member staff when a Principal or Owner is an active AIA level member.
- Licensed Architects (Non AIA Member): $240/person
- Technical Staff: $160/person (Qualified for Associate Membership, but nonmembers. For example, CAD draftspersons or other project-billable staff doing architectural work.)
Supplemental dues will be reflected on the invoice that is sent to the primary AIA member of the firm (Principal, President, etc.) in Section C 'Dues Liability Calculator'. Firms will not be assessed these dues until their 2nd year of membership.
Supplemental dues are not levied on a firm's active Architect or Associate members as they have already paid member dues. These fees help support local chapter programs; however they do not constitute membership. For example, a principal's AIA Member number can be used to purchase a quantity of event tickets at the member rate.
TRANSFER YOUR MEMBERSHIP
If you have moved into our chapter region and you are a member in good standing for this year, you may transfer your membership at no cost.
To initiate your transfer, download our transfer form and submit it to your former chapter for their signature. Transfers usually take 2 months to be fully processed; including updating the addresses for your subscription to Architectural Record (AIA and Associate AIA members).
If you have not paid your dues for this year to your former chapter, your transfer process will include paying our full chapter dues amount for your membership category.
For more information on all the California chapters, please see the AIA California Council, or download a .pdf of all the California chapters. If you live out of state, you can also search for your local chapter (component) at the AIA National website.
