ELIGIBILITY
You must live, work, or attend school in San Francisco/Marin counties in order to join the AIA SF as an AIA or Associate AIA Member. If do not live or work in San Francisco or Marin County, download the Out the Chapter form and contact your local chapter to discuss what will best suit your professional needs. Note that permission to join another chapter is not always granted. Residency requirements do not apply to Allied members or Component Affiliates.
Architect Member (AIA): Individuals licensed to practice architecture in a U.S. state or territory.

- Supplemental dues: Sole proprietors, firm partners or principals of a corporation are also responsible for payment of an AIA firm non-member surcharge beginning with the second year of membership.
Associate Member (Assoc. AIA): Individual without a U.S. architectural license who is either a recent architect graduate, working in architecture, or a faculty member in a university program in architecture.

Qualified candidates include individuals without a U.S. architectural license who meets one of the four membership criteria:
- Recent graduate with a degree in architecture
- Currently enrolled in the Intern Development Program (IDP) and working toward licensure
- Currently work under the supervision of an architect or hold a degree in architecture
- Faculty member in a university program in architecture
Recent Graduate - Associate Member (Assoc. AIA): Individual without a U.S. architectural license who is either a recent architect graduate, working in architecture, or a faculty member in a university program in architecture.

- Qualified individuals receive up to 18 months of free membership in the AIA, ending December 31 of the following year of graduation.
- Candidates include individuals who have graduated with a degree in architecture from a NAAB-accredited school. You can access a list of accredited programs here.
- Eligible individuals must provide a copy of a diploma or transcript.
International Associate AIA (Int'l Assoc. AIA): Individuals who are licensed to practice architecture in a country other than the United States are eligible to become an international associate AIA member.

Emeritus
Emeritus membership is available to any architect or associate member who has been a member of the AIA for 15 successive years and is either 70 years of age, or 60 years of age and fully retired, or is incapacitated and unable to work in the architecture profession. Emeritus members receive similar benefits as architect and associate members but will now have an emeritus status, without the customary membership fees. - 2010 New Membership Dues: $0 (no mailings)

Component Affiliate: AIA or Assoc. AIA members who would like to belong to AIA San Francisco in addition to their primary chapter.
An AIA Architect or Associate member in good standing with another chapter who wants to take advantage of San Francisco & Marin county programs and discounts.
Allied: Individual working in a field related to architecture.
Individual working in a field related to architecture, such as design, engineering, construction, law, marketing, etc. - 2010 New Membership Dues: $350.00

- Allied membership does not include membership at the state and national levels.
- Allied members share in all AIA San Francisco resources, programs, services, and activities, establishing relationships with architects that go beyond sales and specifications.
Corporate Allied: Firms related to the field of architecture.
Firms related to the field of architecture, such as design, engineering, construction, law, marketing, etc., who wish to have the entire firm receive benefits of local membership.
Student: Individual currently enrolled in an architecture or architecture-related program at a local institution.
Students currently enrolled in an architecture or architecture-related program at a local institution. If you are not enrolled in an accredited program, you may not qualify for Associate status when you graduate - please see the requirements listed above. This membership is separate from the "AIA Student" (AIAS) organization. Schools in the Bay Area with architecture programs include:
- California College of the Arts
- UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design
- Academy of Art University
- City College of San Francisco
- San Francisco Institute of Architecture
- University of San Francisco
SUPPLEMENTAL DUES
These dues do not apply to Allied firms, or firms in which the Principal is an Associate AIA member.
AIA member firms are responsible for paying additional dues for their non-member staff when a Principal or Owner is an active AIA level member.
- Licensed Architects (Non AIA Member): $240/person
- Technical Staff: $160/person (Qualified for Associate Membership, but nonmembers. For example, CAD draftspersons or other project-billable staff doing architectural work.)
Supplemental dues will be reflected on the invoice that is sent to the primary AIA member of the firm (Principal, President, etc.) in Section C 'Dues Liability Calculator'. Firms will not be assessed these dues until their 2nd year of membership.
Supplemental dues are not levied on a firm's active Architect or Associate members as they have already paid member dues. These fees help support local chapter programs; however they do not constitute membership. For example, a principal's AIA Member number can be used to purchase a quantity of event tickets at the member rate.
USING YOUR NEW BENEFITS
Local AIA SF member benefits are active as of the day you submit your application. However, you will not have your member number until after your application and payment are processed at the National office. If you wish to register for an event or class using your new local-member discount but do not have a number, provide a copy of your application or other proof of your new membership with your registration.
