Summary: The U.S. Green Building Council - Northern California Chapter (USGBC-NCC) seeks a dynamic, experienced green building expert to lead the Chapter’s multi-faceted green building educational and public policy efforts. This is an unparalleled opportunity to become a key staff member of one of the leading organizations in the sustainable communities movement.

The Director of Policy and Education will work closely with the Advocacy and Program Committees of the Board, the Executive Director, and the Program Coordinator to deliver a ground-breaking educational program for the Chapter’s members while significantly influencing construction and environmental public policy. The position reports to the Executive Director.

USGBC-NCC is one of 70 chapters of the U.S. Green Building Council, the world’s fastest growing NGO. USGBC-NCC’s geographic area includes branches in Sacramento, Monterey Bay, and Silicon Valley, with headquarters in downtown San Francisco. Job Description: The Director of Policy and Education’s responsibilities include: • Manage the Chapter’s advocacy efforts in the area of public policy. This includes:  Supporting the Chapter’s Advocacy, Residential Green Building and LEED for Schools Committees to identify priorities, coordinate activities, and provide logistical and content support  Working with the above committees to analyze, comment on and coordinate campaigns around proposed legislation and policy  Building coalitions with like-minded organizations  Testifying and/or speaking about green building policies or recommendations • Oversee high-quality green building educational programs and curriculum. These may include, but not be limited to: prioritizing educational programs, possible outsourcing LEED AP exam preparation workshops and/or other educational programs; monthly meetings; industry roundtables; LEED module trainings; LEED study groups; LEED User Groups; and other programs TBD. The Director of Policy and Education will work closely with the Program Committee and Program Coordinator on these efforts. • Green building research: work with the Program Committee and potential institutional partners, to develop relevant research on the efficacy of green building. • Assist the Executive Director with overall Chapter growth strategy and planning and other areas that may arise. • Communicate with Chapter members and the broader public. This includes: public speaking, writing for the e-newsletter, responding to media inquiries, and representing USGBC-NCC at conferences and events. • Develop and manage training and educational partnerships with allied organizations.

Skills and Qualities: NCC seeks a bright, high-energy, flexible, and dynamic person with green building and public policy experience. Candidates should have a passion for green building and an understanding of its critical role in mitigating global climate change and promoting overall social sustainability, as well as its business benefits.

Skills and qualifications include: • 3 years green building experience, in the areas of architecture, design, development, engineering, policy, consulting or other relevant fields required. • Public policy and advocacy experience strongly preferred, including familiarity with the legislative process, issues pertaining to green building, effective lobbying and excellent personal communications and relationship building skills. • Education or training background desired: experience in program and curriculum development, training and workshop presentation and assessment. • LEED AP preferred, but not required (should plan on acquiring accreditation within 6 months of hire if not LEED AP.) • Excellent communications (verbal, written, and presentation) skills, as well as organizational and coordination skills required. • Entrepreneurial spirit: comfortable in a start-up environment, ready and able to learn quickly. Be results oriented, and able to adapt to changing priorities. • Must be a self-starter, detail-oriented, have a passionate commitment to high-quality, and be well organized. • Must be able to effectively interface with Chapter members, Board, USGBC national staff, legislators and legislative staff, State and local government elected officials and staff and green building advocates on the phone, email and in person, and have a strong commitment to customer service. • Must have basic competence in spreadsheet, database and office computer and Internet technology. • BA degree in environmental studies, urban planning, architecture or related field required. Master’s Degree preferred.

Compensation: Competitive salary, DOE. Health, dental, and vision benefits; 2 weeks paid vacation; 403b employee contribution plan available, with employer contributions in planning stages.
